Other Oil Heating Tips
We share some tips that might help with your oil spending.
Know Your Oil Tank Size
Generally, free oil delivery starts from 150 gallons. Assuming your oil tank is about 275-330 gallons, we recommend ordering when your level hits 1/4 for a 1-2 week buffer to refill your tank.
As an Emergency You Can Use Diesel Fuel
If you don’t have enough fuel to last to your next delivery, you can buy diesel oil at the gas station and fill it as an emergency. (prices are higher due to tax) You’ll need a clean 5 gallon fuel jug with strong arms and a good spout so you don’t spill while handling it. Safe fuel handling required!
Monitor Oil Prices
Oil prices go up and down frequently and on the wrong cycle, you may be paying easily $50 to $100+ more per fill than you could have done with.
Fill Your Tank Before You Run Out
If you’ve never been on oil heating before, you MUST fill your tank before your oil tank runs out. If you run your oil empty, air will get into your supply lines preventing the pump from pumping oil even after filling the tank. You’ll need to pay for a boiler technician to purge this for you.

Happy Oil Campers
Thanks for the oil tips!
I placed an order through CODOIL.COM but they couldn’t make an emergency delivery. Other places wouldn’t deliver in time so I borrowed a diesel fuel can from my landlord and filled my bottom low tank until delivery.

We never realized we were paying too much for oil.
I was on automatic oil delivery. I didn’t know my auto delivery prices were so high. I switched to manual ordering and have been saving about $200 per fill.
